Sara Lamond — Visual Artist in Fourchu, Cape Breton

Sara Lamond grew up in Sydney, Cape Breton, and later moved to Sydney, Australia, where she worked in IT. While there, she began exploring photography, but eventually moved toward abstract painting and mixed-media collage.

After more than twenty years abroad, she returned home in 2021 and now lives in Fourchu, on Cape Breton Island. Sara owns and runs Driftwood Gallery in Fourchu, where she sells her original artworks and prints.

She also creates and sells wearable art based on her paintings. Having introduced people to this wearable art at the Richmond Artists Alliance Gallery in D’Escousse, we can attest that it is quite striking and never fails to intrigue.

One of the paintings featured prominently in the video is Not quite what I had in mind. Sara inverted the image of it in Photoshop and used it as the basis for what has become one of her most popular patterns for her wearable art. We included it at the end of the first slideshow, presenting it as if it were a painting.

Fourchu is Home Now

Sara said, “I love water. I need it to be near water. Australia’s very dry, so that was always my goal. I had to live next to the water.” The water and salt marsh that she can see out her studio window plays a significant role in her art.

First in the Caper Shorts Series

Sara Lamond is the first artist featured in our Caper Shorts series. We travelled to her studio to talk about her art and get a sense of her space — both within the studio and gallery, and in the world that surrounds her.
